According to Islamic belief, the use of a particular type of kohl is thought to be healing and used for medicinal purposes for both men and women. This is based on the following saying by the Prophet Muhammad: "One of the best kinds of kohl that you use is Ithmid (antimony); it brightens the vision and makes the hair (eye-lashes) grow."

It is also a tradition in some Muslim countries for men to apply kohl to their eyes during Ramadan. However this practice is not necessarily based on any authentic sources.
